Where did it go? 11/20/2008

I'm not ready for the Christmas season to be in full force yet, but the television and newspaper ads show me otherwise.  Where did 2008 go?  It's actually flown by for me.  So much has happened. I've got a publisher for my book, Feisty Family Values.  I had a reading done of my play, BB&J.  I was president of KWA.  I juggled my full time day job with freelance writing nights and on the weekends.  Hum. That may be why the year flew by. I was busy.

I'm guessing you can say the same.  There's always something going on with family, work, and our extracurricular activities.  But, did we accomplish anything?  I'm thinking - YES.  Did we have some fun - YES.  Was it stressful?  Yes, but it passed.

What's on for next year?  More of the same in the way of job and freelancing, I hope - layoffs loom everywhere.  I'll be working on a marketing plan for the book.  I'll no doubt be doing some more editing on the book and the play.  I'd like to get the play staged next year, but first things first - it still needs tweaking.  Writing regularly.  Reading often.  And exercise - now there's a concept I need to work on.  How about you?

This is a call to action to all writers - myself included.  What are you going to do next?  Is there a contest coming up that you can submit to?  Have you edited your short story or novel until it is as good as you think it can be?  If so, then it's time to go in search of a venue for publishing.

I'll admit that my reject folder is pretty big.  But over the past couple of years my published folder has grown much faster.  Contest submissions helped me a lot to get the feedback I needed to improve my work.  While I've been doing quite a bit more non-fiction recently it has helped me improve my writing. I write tighter. I write faster. And I haven't missed a deadline.  These are all good skills to learn if you are a writer.

So while you're waiting for that big break, keep writing, keep submitting, and you'll keep improving.
